"Travel Journals. Matera" – Pedro Cano and his pupils

12th June - 13th September 2015

Pedro Cano returns to Basilicata to tell the story of the European Capital of Culture 2019, Matera, through an exhibit made up of 11 watercolour works as an homage to the city of the Sassi’s reached goal, but accompanied this time by 24 pupils that portrayed the city’s views in the previous watercolour painting seminar held by the Mr. Cano in 2013, during the days before the presentation of the application dossier at the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism.

The exhibition is titled “Quaderni di Viaggio. Matera. Pedro Cano e i suoi allievi” for this reason. It will be opened on 12th June at 6.30 pm until 13th September; it is organized by Porta Coeli International Art Gallery and Study Centre for Mediterranean Culture at its own premises in Palazzo Rapolla, in the ancient town of Venosa, and curated by Fiorella Fiore.

Venosa was chosen as “the coral path begun in Matera in a Region discovering its beauty, made of diversity, variety, history and art crossing centuries and distances, and wanting to show it to the world”, as written in the catalogue by Fiorella Fiore, the curator.

In the artworks made by the artists that went along with Pedro Cano through the journey two years ago (Sergio Bigolin, Carolina Campanozzi, Emanuela Chiavoni, Leonardo Ciappi, Elia Cosimi, Cristiano Crescenzi, Silvia de Bastiani, Fausta d’Ubaldo, Isabel Moreno Gonzalez, Salvatore Grande, Mariella Guastella, Juana Iniesta , Marinella Lombini, Roberto Magnolfi, Joselina Rivera, Marina Romero, Laura Sarra, Angela Sanz, Luisa Saraceni, Nives Stocco, Silvano Tacus, Maite Uzzuranga, Wladimir Lopez de Zamora, Michela Zasio), all rigorously made en plein air, the idea of the Master is clearly understandable: “dialogue with the essence of the place, hoping to have touched its soul at least once”.

The initiative, enjoying the patronage of the Municipality of Venosa and the Comitato Matera 2019, will be completed discovering Venosa, one of the most beautiful places in Italy, from 11th to 14th June, reaching places such as the Unfinished Abbey and Pirro del Balzo Castle, two architectonical jewels of the town.

The exhibition will be opened until 13th September: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm | 4 pm to 8 pm.
